WHY THIS MATTERS
As a U.S. veteran, your VA benefits can pay for in-home care.
Many veterans across Washington State qualify for benefits that cover the cost of personal care, companionship, homemaker support at home, but never use them. The application process is the barrier, not eligibility.
Solutions In-Home Care is proudly contracted with the VA to serve veterans in their homes. Our Care Team guides you and your family through the eligibility process — helping you understand the forms and prepare for each step, with Care Management support available for more complicated cases. The veteran or their power of attorney submits the paperwork and is the VA’s point of contact; we’re alongside you the whole way.
Once your benefits are approved, billing for your in-home care is handled directly between Solutions and the VA, so you’ll never see a charge, and your hard-earned retirement and pension stay intact.

Frequently Asked Questions
VA Homemaker & Home Health Aide benefits, answered
How much does the VA pay for in-home care, and will it cost me anything?
For eligible veterans, the VA covers the cost of Homemaker & Home Health Aide care directly — the VA pays the contracted agency, so you receive services, not a bill. Many veterans pay nothing out of pocket. Veterans who receive care for a service-connected condition generally have no copay at all.
For some veterans whose care is not service-connected, a small daily copay may apply depending on your priority group and financial assessment, and it typically only begins after an initial period of care within a 12-month window. Because copays depend on your individual status, the best way to know your exact cost is to ask a Solutions Care Manager or your VA social worker to review your situation. Either way, you'll never pay our agency directly — billing is handled between Solutions and the VA.
What's the difference between Homemaker & Home Health Aide care and Aid & Attendance?
They're two different kinds of VA benefit. The Homemaker & Home Health Aide (H/HHA) program is a clinical health service: the VA pays a contracted agency to send a trained aide to your home to help with daily personal care. You receive care, not cash.
Aid & Attendance is a cash pension benefit — an added monthly payment on top of a VA pension that the veteran can spend on care however they choose. Some veterans qualify for both and use them together. Solutions In-Home Care delivers services under the H/HHA program; we're happy to point you toward resources on Aid & Attendance if you'd like to explore that separately.
Can my spouse or family caregiver get help through the VA too?
The Homemaker & Home Health Aide program provides care to the veteran, but it's designed with families in mind. It includes respite care, which gives a spouse or family caregiver a scheduled break while a trained aide steps in.
Separately, the VA offers caregiver support programs, and spouses or survivors of veterans with qualifying service-connected disabilities may be eligible for health coverage through CHAMPVA. If a family member is leading your care, we'll help them understand which of these may apply — you don't have to sort it out alone.
How many hours of in-home care can a veteran get each week?
There isn't a single fixed number — approved hours are based on a clinical assessment of the veteran's needs. After a referral, VA Patient Care Services evaluates how much help you need with daily activities and authorizes a weekly amount of care to match.
Hours can range from a few per week up to substantial weekly support for veterans who need more assistance, and they can be adjusted over time as needs change. The VA reassesses periodically, and you or your family can request a review if your situation changes. A Solutions Care Manager can help you prepare for the assessment so your real level of need is clearly documented.
How do I apply for VA Homemaker & Home Health Aide services in the Tri-Cities or Walla Walla?
First, you'll need to be enrolled in VA health care. From there, the key step is a referral: ask your VA primary care provider for a "Geriatrics and Extended Care consult" for Homemaker and Home Health Aide services. This is documented on VA Form 10-10172 (the GEC referral). The VA then confirms your eligibility and authorizes weekly care hours.
You can also request a specific provider — that's where Solutions In-Home Care comes in. Veterans in Kennewick, Richland, Pasco, Walla Walla, and College Place can ask for us by name. Reach out to your local Care Team (Jessica Colbray in the Tri-Cities or Dane Conklin in Walla Walla), and we'll guide you through each step of the process.
Who qualifies for VA-paid in-home care?
Eligibility comes down to three things: enrollment in VA health care, a clinical need for help with daily activities, and a referral from your VA care team. The Homemaker & Home Health Aide program is for veterans whose assessment shows they need help with personal care or everyday tasks to stay safely at home.
Priority often goes to veterans with service-connected conditions, those with greater clinical need, and certain priority groups. You don't have to figure eligibility out yourself — your VA primary care provider and a Solutions Care Manager can review your status and start the referral.
